The VDD has detained a person for activities in the interests of Russia

In connection with the suspicion of of Russia public support for crimes committed against Ukraine and its citizens and violation of international sanctions State Security Service (VDD) last weekend carried out court-sanctioned criminal procedural actions at three objects in Riga and its surroundings, detaining one person, portal “Delfi” learned from the service.

The criminal process was initiated on July 29 of this year in accordance with Article 74.1 of the Criminal Law, namely on the public glorification and justification of crimes against peace and war crimes, as well as Article 84, namely European Union (EU) sanctions violation.

The information obtained in the course of the VDD investigation shows that the person justified the hostilities initiated by Russia in Ukraine and the war crimes committed by the Russian armed forces in several Russian propaganda resources, as well as spread misinformation about Latvia and its allied countries with the aim of discrediting them. Also, the information available to the service shows that the person cooperated with a person included in the EU sanctions list.

During the criminal procedural activities, the VDD has obtained a large amount of data carriers and documents, and the analysis of their content is currently underway. The person was given the status of a suspect and a security measure of detention.

VDD reminds that no person is considered guilty until his guilt has been recognized in accordance with the procedures prescribed by law.
