To date, the dear old lyres represent a highly coveted collector’s item. Like the old 10 lire spikes which are worth a real fortune.
Old banknotes and coins always bring back pleasant memories and it is not difficult to find some examples still preserved in a drawer. Clearly, not all of them have an interesting economic value, but there are pieces such as the case of the 10 lire ear, highly coveted by collectors and numismatics enthusiasts, so they can represent a real treasure hidden in the home.
Before knowing the details that make a 10 lira worth, it is important to know that there are some factors that significantly influence the value of a coin. First, the rarity. A rare coin will have a market demand greater than supply, consequently its value will be very high. However, rarity alone is not always enough. Although rare, in fact, the coin must be in excellent condition, or rather in Uncirculated condition. The Uncirculated coin shows no sign of circulation and retains its original shine, in practice, it is the highest level of coin conservation, for this reason, owning an FdC example could mean pocketing a really nice nest egg.
But now let’s get to the point and find out what characteristics the ten lire ear has that makes you earn a fortune.
10 lire ear: when it’s worth a fortune
The ten lire spiga was created starting in 1951 by the Rome mint, replacing the previous variant known by the name 10 lire Olivo. The coin, issued in a metal alloy known as Italma, is recognizable by the depiction of a plow on the obverse and the indication of the nominal value and two ears of wheat (hence the name ten lire ear) on the reverse.
As we anticipated, not all ten liras of corn have an interesting economic value. The rarest versions are the highest paid ones. In particular, an example dated 1951 and 1952 they can be worth up to 40 euros. A ten lire ear of 1954however, it can even exceed 100 euros if in perfect condition.
