The Russian Sputnik V vaccine is effective against Omicron and protects against severe disease, and a dose of Sputnik Light, given half a year later, increases the protection for those who were initially vaccinated with other vaccines. This was announced by its creators from “Gamalea”, quoted by TASS.
According to Gamalea research, when infected with Omicron, Sputnik V prevents hospitalization and the level of protection reaches 80%. According to the creator of the vaccine, Alexander Ginzburg, after revaccination with the vaccine, a person would be protected just as well as against the currently dominant strain of Delta.
Revaccination is recommended 6 months after the first two doses, but Russian health authorities have discussed whether this period should be shortened given the aggressive approach of the new option.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to provide Sputnik Light to other countries, including European ones, as a booster dose against Omicron. “We have enough produced quantities that we can share with other countries,” Putin said.
So far, Omicron has been detected in 80 countries, including Russia, where 25 cases have been reported.
Prior to Gamalea’s announcement that their vaccine was effective against Omicron, Pfizer said it was adamant that three doses of their vaccine also protected against the new strain.
