There is still no corona vaccine on the market. However, preparations for the vaccination operation are in full swing. Also in Main-Spessart. The vaccination center in Lohr’s Spessarttorhalle should be ready to go by the middle of the month.
But it will take a while after that until the hall is busy. Because initially the vaccination is offered to risk groups such as medical staff or employees and residents of retirement homes. These vaccinations should take place in the respective facilities. Andreas Hafenrichter, the man responsible in the district office, explained this on request. Accordingly, three-person mobile vaccination teams will be on the road, consisting of a doctor, a medical specialist and an administrative employee.
Goal: 300 vaccinations per day
According to the port judge, a vaccination consists of two injections two to three weeks apart. According to the port judge, appointments will be made over the Internet. However, only when the vaccination of the risk groups has been completed. How long that will take cannot be said at the moment. You first have to gain experience of the number of vaccinations you have to cope with per day. The ministry’s requirement is: at least 300 vaccinations per day per district. In the coming week, institutions such as retirement homes will be asked to what extent residents are ready to receive vaccinations.
Before the vaccination can start, an organizational effort has to be mastered. In order to get all Bavarian districts on the same course, there was a video conference on Thursday with Health Minister Melanie Huml and all district administrators. It was announced that the infrastructure must be in place everywhere by December 15th at the latest. According to the port judge, the district has commissioned a stand builder to equip the Lohrer Spessarttorhalle. The partition walls are already in place. Unlike with blood donations, however, there will be no loungers. “The vaccination comes in the upper arm”, explains Hafenrichter, that the procedure will not differ from that which one knows from other vaccinations at the doctor.

Storage at minus 70 degrees Celsius
The provision of the vaccine must also be organized. The Free State is building a logistics system for this. Apparently, they are currently preparing for a vaccine from the manufacturer duo Biontech / Pfizer to be used first.
The special thing about it: According to the port judge, it has to be stored at minus 70 degrees Celsius. It is therefore planned that the manufacturer will deliver the vaccine to a central location equipped with freezers. For Lower Franconia it will be in Würzburg. From there, the vaccine goes to the vaccination centers in boxes filled with dry ice. Then the vaccine can be stored in refrigerators for three to four days before it has to be administered. However, vaccines from other manufacturers are also being prepared, which are a little less complicated to use, said Hafenrichter. At the moment, of course, nobody can say for sure when and in what quantities the first vaccine will be available.
Six-digit costs
According to the port judge, the district must first make advance payments for the costs of the vaccination center and the vaccination operation, with an amount “well into the six-figure range”. However, the Free State announced that it would take over the costs later.
According to the port judge, the requirement is that the vaccination center should initially be operated for six months. The decision was made for the Spessarttorhalle as the location because, unlike the Scherenberghalle in Gemünden, the hall belongs to the district. In addition to accessibility, another criterion is the structural condition. The hall in Lohr is the best that the district has, according to Hafenrichter.
