The Utrecht Dom Tower is a little more visible from today. The symbol of the city was covered in scaffolding for more than four years due to restoration work. “My children have never seen him ‘without a jacket’,” says councilor Dennis de Vries RTV Utrecht.

Dismantling the scaffolding is done step by step. The top 40 meters of the tower should be free of scaffolding by the end of this year. The Cathedral should be fully visible again in September 2024. The councilor may remove the first scaffolding pipe today.

Tourists stayed away

According to Utrecht Marketing, which operates the building, many tourists stayed away from the Dom Tower because of the scaffolding. In 2018, the last year without scaffolding, around 90,000 people climbed the Cathedral. This year they expect about half that number of visitors.

“The moment there are scaffolding around something, people think it is closed. We notice that very much,” says Cor Jansen of Utrecht Marketing.

Both the councilor and the operator cannot wait until all the scaffolding has disappeared. “I often hear from people that they feel at home again when they see the Cathedral again,” says De Vries. “Soon this will be possible again without scaffolding. The end is in sight and that is a great moment.”
