JawaPos.com – Currently, the use of Wolbachia bacteria as an effort to replicate the dengue virus or Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in mosquitoes is being widely used.
However, the use of Wolbachia bacteria is apparently still not widely understood by the public and has raised new concerns.
Nevertheless, Professor of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) University of Indonesia (UI), Prof. Anom Bowolaksono explained that Wolbachia bacteria are natural bacteria that exist in the bodies of insects, such as mosquitoes, and do not infect humans.
The rate of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases has been successfully reduced in several countries, such as Australia and Singapore because they have implemented this innovation.
Quoted from Antara, Saturday (2/12), according to him, the occurrence of an outbreak or disease must be determined by the number of vectors and sufferers.
If the number of vectors decreases, the disease will not spread as easily, which means the spread rate will decrease.
“The problem for humans is how to reduce the number of dengue sufferers. Until now there is still no cure for dengue fever. Therefore, one alternative is to break the vector chain by suppressing the population of mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus,” he explained.

According to research, Wolbachia bacteria are able to reduce the capacity of mosquitoes by targeting reproductive tissue.
In male animals, the Wolbachia bacteria will make the male mosquito more feminine and unable to produce spermatozoa.
Meanwhile, in females, Wolbachia bacteria will attack reproductive tissue and cause female mosquitoes to be unable to lay eggs.
Later, mosquitoes become immature and unable to transmit the Dengue virus to humans who are bitten.
Anom also explained that mosquitoes that carry Wolbachia bacteria have nothing to do with encephalitis or inflammation Japanese Encephalitisas has been widely discussed recently on social media.
