The number of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide, and in a few years it is expected that one in 10 hypoglycemia will have type 2 diabetes. The latest development is that artificial intelligence has found use in insulin pumps, which can now predict what the next sugar level will be and deliver the appropriate amount of insulin.
The above was highlighted by the professor of Pathology – Diabetes at AUTH, Triantafyllos Didangelos, speaking to APE-MPE, during his speech in the section “Implementation of the latest technology in the treatment of diabetes mellitus” of the Aristotle Medical Forum Conference 2024.
“Both insulin pumps and glucose sensors have come a long way in recent years. Insulin pumps are some devices, which have a program and based on this program give insulin to people with diabetes. Glucose sensors measure sugar, not in the blood but in the subcutaneous tissue. These sensors have improved, they have very good accuracy in measuring sugar, communicate wirelessly with insulin pumps and provide sugar values. The insulin pump, thanks to its software, can also recommend an appropriate dose of insulin to the patient. The technology has made great progress, there are two or three models abroad, but in Greece there is only one of them, which can prove 24 hours a day how to give insulin alone and its all people with diabetes to enter. the amount of carbohydrates he eats in the next meal. If he registers, for example, 30, 40-50 grams of carbohydrates, he will put that into the system and the system can recommend the doses of insulin he should take. Abroad, in America, a similar system is already distributed, because you don’t even need to take in carbohydrates. You simply name the food and it finds out how many carbs you have eaten and adjusts accordingly, becoming more aggressive when insulin is given. It’s an even greater convenience for patients, because they don’t have to record carbohydrates,” said Mr. Didangelos.
At the same time, he notes that artificial intelligence has found applications in insulin pumps to help people better control their sugar. “Basically, with insulin pumps today we have artificial intelligence programs that predict what the next blood sugar level will be in order to deliver the appropriate amount of insulin. This is a very recent thing. The sensors, they only have to measure the sugar and what we ask is that they measure it precisely, because the measurement is not done in the blood but in the subcutaneous tissue. There is still a bit of a lack in terms of accuracy,” said Mr. Didangelos.
Insulin pumps and glucose sensors are indicated for all diabetic patients who use insulin. In Greece, both insulin pumps and glucose sensors, which have a high cost, together with their products, are reimbursed only for people with type 1 diabetes , ie juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. As Mr. Didangelos says, abroad these systems are reimbursed by the insurance funds for patients with type 2 diabetes.
“As throughout the world, as in Greece, the incidence of diabetes is specific – not type 1 but type 2, ie independent of insulin, which is considered a disease of the – adult sugar. It is expected that, within the next few years, one out of every 10 Greeks or one out of every 10 adult inhabitants of the world will suffer from diabetes. In the appearance of type 2 diabetes, lifestyle factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and diet play an important role, which usually leads to obesity. Of course, there is also a clear hereditary predisposition in these people, but if they follow certain health rules they should improve, manage,” referring to Mr. Didangelos.
Finally, Mr. Didangelos says: “Things have improved and they are especially pleasant for people with type 1 diabetes, who mostly have the biggest problem, because they ‘ appear in adolescence or even at a younger age and they live 60-80 years or so. . problem The message for type 1 diabetes patients is to try the technology, it will help them. The results of using the new technology in the two years since its release are amazing. A major complication of diabetes is hypoglycemia. These are greatly reduced and people should trust these devices, at least to avoid hypoglycemia to a large extent. Recordings from these devices and we saw almost zero episodes of hypoglycemia.”
