The USC team wins the silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad

The team from the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) -composed of Héctor Folgar Cameán, Francisco Morales Vidal, Javier Polo Noche and Roi Vence Nogueira- He has won a silver medal at the Open Mathematical Olympiad for University Students.

In this contest, organized by the International University for the Humanities and Development and held electronically, the teams They must solve ten problems from different areas of mathematics in a maximum of ten hours.

“The good results of the team show, in addition to the individual skills of their students, their abilities to work together”, highlights the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Elena Vázquez Cendón.

These four students partly developed their skills in the framework of the Sementeira problem-solving seminar, promoted four years ago by the Eduardo García-Rodeja Association and coordinated by professors David Mosquera Lois and Daniel Cabo Labora.

“In this type of contest the problems do not obey the standards: It is not so much about applying a formula or a known procedure to obtain a result, but rather the resolution of each issue is a challenge and a deductive exploration”relate Mosquera and Cao.

It is the first time that USC participates in a team math Olympiad, Therefore, the Faculty of Mathematics hopes to be able to give continuity to this initiative thanks to the success obtained and the “very positive” assessment of the students.
