Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed an all-terrain vehicle in the form of a “flying saucer” that can navigate the uneven surfaces of the moon and asteroids. About this on Wednesday, December 29, informs ScienceAlert.

According to aerospace engineer Paulo Lozano, with a levitating all-terrain vehicle, there is no need to worry about wheels or moving parts, as well as uneven terrain.

As indicated, the device will be powered by an electric field, which is created due to the direct influence of the Sun and the surrounding plasma. In the absence of an atmosphere, such solar exposure creates a charge capable of lifting dust more than a meter above the moon’s surface, and this energy can be harnessed.

The “plate” was made from a material called mylar. It will retain its charge when exposed to sunlight. Tiny ion beams are used both to charge a vehicle and to increase natural surface charge and counteract gravity.

According to the developers, their technology will help to examine the rocky surfaces of large asteroids and the Moon from close range and study their nature.

As reported, December 15 NASA mini-helicopter Ingenuity swooped over the surface of Mars record time – 30 minutes and 48 seconds.
