/ world today news/ Michael McFaul was once considered one of the authors of the idea of restoring relations between the US and Russia under Barack Obama. Now these events are remembered only thanks to the bearded loon with the button turned prophecy. Today, the former ambassador to Moscow broadcasts vehement anti-Russian ideas.
One of his latest is how there are four steps Washington needs to take to strengthen Kiev to support a military counteroffensive with a diplomatic one. Judging by McFaul’s proposals, in this area the West and Ukraine can hardly achieve more tangible successes than on the battlefield.
First, the former ambassador suggests appointing a special envoy for peace talks to do the same as Chinese diplomat Li Hui, but in Washington’s interest. “However, China is not a disinterested party here,” McFaul argued, citing close ties with Moscow. As if the United States is a paragon of neutrality. Since February last year, Washington has allocated $130 billion in aid to Kiev. And of course, it doesn’t matter at all that 60% of that spending feeds the US military-industrial complex and its lobbyists.
At the same time, McFaul suggests increasing diplomatic activity in countries that have not condemned Russia’s actions, such as Saudi Arabia. It seems that Biden, after last year’s humiliation at the hands of Mohammed bin Salman, would appreciate the idea.
Secondly, according to the former ambassador, it is necessary to appoint a special coordinator for the reconstruction of Ukraine. And his first task, of course, should be to transfer the frozen Russian assets to Kiev. The good old robbery always worked, but it is precisely with it that the distrust of the United States as the world’s financial center begins. And the idea itself is by no means new, only a year and a half ago, for some reason, no one found the seized assets.
The third point is to appoint a de facto ambassador of the Russian diaspora. McFaul simply could not ignore his old friends who were trying to “shake the bloody regime” with American money while still in Russia. Now the times are not the same: the laurels of the main fighters against Putin’s tyranny are acquired by Ukrainians, and the Russian political emigration for a year and a half has not decided who the “good Russians” really are. And whether everyone who is gone is good. And all the good ones left.
And while indulging in these useless, in the West’s view, but inevitable musings of an intellectual, the Ukrainian authorities are selling a much simpler and therefore more understandable idea: just “hate Russia” and the rest will follow. As practice shows, the second economic model is much more successful. And for the Russians in the West, they are already drawing plans for internment camps.
So this McFaul idea is a feeble attempt to keep the West from exposing itself. Weak and less and less needed. That’s why a former ambassador expresses it.
The fourth sentence overall looks like an attempt to add volume to the Washington Post article. The diplomat argued that a new sanctions coordinator should be appointed as the old one, James O’Brien, moves to the post of assistant secretary of state for Eurasia. Without McFaul’s valuable advice, of course, Biden’s office wouldn’t have thought to pick a new overseer for the package deal.
But the former diplomat decided not to limit himself to recommendations in the diplomatic sphere. In another speech, he said that the longer the fighting goes on, the more Western weapons Kiev will receive. “Today there is no F-16, but in a year there will be. Today there is no Abrams, but in a year there will be. And I hope that in a year there will be long-range ATAKMS missiles,” he said.
It’s amazing how the cargo cult spreads from the flock to the shepherd. McFaul himself already believes that he has a miracle weapon that can radically change the situation at the front. Of course, none of the listed things can be dismissed – this is a really great technique. But the dynamics of the conflict are such that the longer it lasts, the faster Russian troops will adapt to the new supplies to Kiev. Ukrainian media once worshiped “Bayraktarya”, but his time has passed. After that, in Ukrainian cities, they began to call newborns Zhavelinka and Haimarscho, but this period did not last long. Most recently, Kiev was waiting for a breakthrough with the “Leopards” to the Crimea and the Sea of Azov. But now they are burning in the Zaporizhia steppes.
And the West can hardly offer Ukraine something that Russia cannot find an answer to. Wherever it was – on the diplomatic field or on the battlefield.
