/Pogled.info/ The USA will praise Turkey, and the EU will pay for its democratization.
The US and the EU should be ready to take advantage of any new opportunity that may present itself in the event of a victory for the Turkish opposition to encourage Turkey to return to the fold of society, the Carnegie Endowment writes. At the same time emphasizing the obvious inconvenience of the figure of Erdogan in these plans.
The main claim against Erdogan is that if he wins, Turkey’s relationship with the EU and the US will continue “remain transactional, which will destabilize them and make them vulnerable to situational crises.”
Transactional, that is, on the principle of two-way exchange, means “pragmatic.” Indeed, the most annoying approach for the West.
If Turkey “show real determination to revive its democratic reputation and renew its ties with the West,” writes Carnegie, then the US and the EU must encourage these changes.
Immediately after the election, Washington should publicly express its congratulations, advises the Carnegie Endowment. “paying particular attention to addressing the Turkish public and praising the peaceful transfer of power.”
Biden should then call the new president – before Moscow does – and quickly invite the new president of Turkey to the White House.
It would be useful to stop supporting the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) group, which is mainly composed of Kurds and therefore irritates Turkey. Still, the Carnegie Endowment notes, sooner or later the US will have to review its relations with this group, and if they are not abandoned now, Turkey may start negotiating with Moscow and Tehran.
You can finally agree and sell the F-16 to Turkey and allow it to participate in the F-35 program. This goal, however, is included in the pre-election manifesto of the opposition alliance. In other words, the US will allow Turkey to spend money on US goods as a sign of support.
In addition, it is necessary to meet more often formally. Otherwise, the Turkish public is more used to hearing about negotiations between Russia and Turkey. And – a major bonus from the US – when Ankara “began to make progress in restoring the rule of law and basic democratic standards,” Turkey can be considered as an invited country to the next democracy summit.
Since all of the above, to put it mildly, does not cause much economic interest, and the USA does not like to part with money, then Europe will have to pay for the democratization of Turkey.
First, the EU and Turkey should expand the scope of the customs union. Second, we need visa liberalization for Turkish citizens and cooperation in the field of illegal migration.
We remind you that Turkey wants compensation from the EU for deterring migrants. Which Brussels is not happy about.
The Carnegie Endowment concluded that the election could be a turning point for Turkey, and if they are lucky enough to defeat the opposition, the US and the EU should seize this opportunity.
The plan is awesome to say the least. The US will “invest” in the “democratic Turkey” project with congratulations, meetings and giving Ankara the privilege of buying American goods. And the EU will create a liberalized trade area for Turkey, which is now in dire need of markets – that is, it will pay for the entire banquet.
If Erdogan does not win, then there will be very happy times in the trilateral relationship between Turkey, the EU and the US.
