In addition, he stressed that they will support the country in the distribution of the doses available in the national territory.

At a press conference, Fennell was asked about another possible donation of vaccines, to which he replied that now the “hope” is to support the placement of the drugs.

“Right now is the second load that we have -for- Guatemala, this was the donation, right now we are trying to have the connection between the factories and the Government of Guatemala … the hope is to support the distribution of what we have here, to help in the future also with the distribution systems and to obtain more between the government directly and the factories ”, he explained.

At the moment, the Government of Guatemala has only made a direct purchase of vaccines, Sputnik V from Russia. The administration of the president, Alejandro Giammattei, promised to acquire 16 million doses, has paid more than Q600 million corresponding to 50% and has received 860 thousand doses.

While the United States sent a second donation of Moderna vaccines to Guatemala this afternoon, consisting of 3 million doses in addition to the first batch of 1.5 million doses, received on July 8 and with which the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, as well as the Guatemalan Social Security Institute, have begun to immunize teachers, public servants, older adults, among others.

ABOUT THE DONATION

On the other hand, the United States Embassy in Guatemala reported that the direct bilateral donation of vaccines arrived on board a specially conditioned American Airlines plane, which departed from Chicago.

“As a partner country and friend of Guatemala, it is our desire to offer Guatemalans the possibility of being vaccinated, to contain this virus and so that they can resume their professional and personal lives,” said the Chargé d’Affaires, Daniel Fennell during the reception.

These 3 million doses are part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to share American vaccines with the world. President Biden has promised that the United States will be an arsenal of vaccines in the fight against COVID-19.

“After landing in La Aurora, the vaccine shipment will be housed in freezers donated by the United States Government to the National Center for Biologicals of the Ministry of Health, in Guatemala City. This donation of vaccines by the US Government is part of a broader strategy to combat the health and economic impacts of COVID-19, ”the diplomatic mission explained.
