The administration of US President Joe Biden today announced an ambitious plan to build 500,000 charging stations for electric cars across the country, the AP agency wrote. The plan was presented by Vice President Kamala Harris.

“The future of transportation in our country and around the world is electric,” Harris said at a charging station in Brandywine, southeast of Washington. “The Biden administration wants to make electric cars accessible to everyone,” she added. At the station, she received a demonstration of the charger function and became acquainted with the plan for electrification of the government’s vehicle fleet in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

The $ 1 trillion ($ 22.5 trillion) infrastructure development plan, approved by the US Congress last month, includes a nationwide network of charging stations and allocates $ 5 billion to build them. Maryland, for example, will receive $ 63 million. The plan also sets aside $ 2.5 billion in local subsidies to support charging stations in rural areas and disadvantaged communities.

Biden’s larger pandemic economic recovery package, a bill on social and environmental policy, totaling less than $ 2 trillion, is now being discussed by the Senate. It includes a tax credit of $ 7,500 (CZK 168,000) to reduce the cost of electric cars.

Biden has set a goal of 20% of cars and trucks powered by electricity by 2030. The effort also aims to help the US overtake China in the electric car market, the AP said.
–
The consulting company LMC Automotive expects sales of new fully electric vehicles in the USA to reach almost 400,000 units this year, which is almost double last year. Electric cars still account for only about 2.6 percent of cars sold, but the consulting firm expects their sales to grow to more than 730,000 next year and more than two million by 2025. This would represent about 12 percent of new car sales.
