U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Wednesday issued a warning about gas price manipulation in Europe, following allegations by members of the European Parliament (MEPs) that Russia is to blame for rising prices.
“The United States has made it clear that we and our partners must be prepared to face players who could manipulate supplies to their advantage,” Granholm said during a visit to Warsaw.
“We take this situation very seriously and are united with our European allies to make sure that you receive an adequate and affordable supply of gas this winter,” the minister added.
More than 40 MEPs have sent a letter accusing Russian gas giant Gazprom of price manipulation.
They believe that reducing the flow of Russian gas through Ukraine is an attempt by Moscow to force Germany to approve the commissioning of the newly completed Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Gazprom denies the allegations.
