Three United States Navy (US) military aircraft were intercepted by a number of aircraft Russia while flying over the Mediterranean Sea. It happened last weekend.
The Pentagon complained that Russia’s military actions were considered unprofessional. Action by Russian aircraft to intercept the US military aircraft is said to be dangerous.
“Although no one was injured, interactions of this kind could trigger miscalculations and errors that lead to more dangerous outcomes,” US Navy Captain Mike Kafka said in a statement. .
Kafka said three P-8A maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft ‘experienced unprofessional intercept by aircraft Russia‘ while ‘flying in international airspace over the Mediterranean Sea’.
The United States expressed its concern to Russian officials through diplomatic communications over the intercept. The US claims it will continue to operate by prioritizing security, professionalism and consistent compliance with international law.
“The United States will continue to operate safely, professionally, and consistent with international law in international waters and airspace,” Kafka said.
Kafka hopes a similar attitude is shown Russia. “We expect Russia to do the same,” he added.
The US official, who asked not to be named, said one of the Russian planes was flying very close to US military aircraft. The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Western countries, including the US, and Russia.
As is known, the tension is related to the deployment of dozens of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border. Western countries fear that Russia is planning to invade Ukraine.
