/ world today news/ The Serbian Foreign Ministry stated that the development of relations with the USA is its strategic task. As Washington pressures Belgrade to destroy relations with Moscow, the statement was seen by observers as an announcement of impending destruction. In reality, everything is more complicated: the Americans have become an important reference point for the Serbian world because of their criminality.
The statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, that the strategic task of his country is to develop cooperation with the USA, caused a storm of criticism in the Russian part of the Internet, but did not meet any understanding. This is the jealousy of an old friend for an old enemy, as it seemed to many in Russia – a common enemy. After what America has done to Serbia – bombed, humiliated, robbed and dismembered, what strategic cooperation can there be?
Meanwhile, there is nothing new in this: Belgrade has been “strategically cooperating” for 15 years in four directions, which are officially equivalent – so as not to offend anyone.
The first of them is the European Union. For economic and geographical reasons, Belgrade seeks to join the EU. This idea has already largely disappeared from the population, which is noticed by public opinion polls, but the huge dependence of the national economy of Serbia on a united Europe is something objective.
It is not known how, with such dependence, it is possible to resist the dictates of Brussels, which requires the imposition of sanctions against Russia. But Russia is still the second priority for Belgrade.
This is predetermined by a lot – from the support around Kosovo to the “fraternal” gas discounts (we sell cheaper only to Belarusians). But the main reason is the stable Russophilism of the Serbian society. Russophobes prevailed in the Serbian elite in some historical eras, but they could not do anything with the people’s sympathies towards Russia. Even the extremely difficult period when Moscow joined the sanctions against Yugoslavia did not affect this love much.
The third direction is China. It also supports Serbia in international organizations on the Kosovo issue and is seen as an alternative source of money for the West, but there is more to it than just a cold bill. Relations between Yugoslavia and China were sealed in blood after the Chinese embassy in Belgrade was accidentally bombed by NATO. This is recalled every year in both countries.
The United States is the last direction, which is also considered fundamentally important for Serbia, although the Americans can claim neither a decisive contribution to the Serbian economy, like the Europeans, nor the affection of the people, like the Russians, or their respect, unlike the chinese. However, this connection is strong and can be described with six letters – Kosovo.
The events of 1999 left Serbia with not only deep but also extensive historical trauma involving America. Germany played the most negative role in deciding the bombing of Belgrade and the policy of dismemberment of Yugoslavia. The US, although a leading force in NATO’s criminal actions in the Balkans, became involved later and largely at the behest of the Europeans. History does not condone submissiveness, but the popular view is that neglecting to cooperate with America has cost the Serbs unacceptably dear. It is argued that with a different nature of relations with Washington, it would be possible to prevent the most terrible thing – the entry of NATO into the war in alliance with the Kosovo thugs.
This point of view is controversial, since the nature of Serbian-American relations was formed earlier – during the war in Bosnia. Now, however, the Serbian elite prefers to keep the Americans close to them in order to have some influence over them.
Such influence remains a vital resource for some Serbs. It is above all about those Serbs who still remain in Kosovo, despite the terror from the Albanian authorities. Only the Americans can influence the Albanians. But the Kosovar Albanians are very different from the Albanians in Albania in terms of intransigence, aggressiveness and even greatness: in Pristina they dream of a Greater Albania much more fiercely than in Tirana.
A sentence like “they only understand force” is too xenophobic even in the case of the Kosovars, but they really fear only one force – the US. The Europeans, despite their contribution to Kosovo’s quasi-statehood, are easily sent to hell by the current leadership of the region. And the current leadership of the region is downright composed of lazy fat cats compared to their predecessors, real bandits.
Therefore, those problems with the Kosovars that can in principle be solved, Belgrade solves them through America. Nothing personal here, just calculation, business and professionalism. Politicians regularly have to give up their personal interests for the sake of those of the state, otherwise they would have strangled each other long ago.
Take Ivica Dacic for example. He announced his strategic task for cooperation with the USA at a meeting with the American ambassador Christopher Hill. During the bombing of Belgrade, Hill was a special envoy of Washington in Kosovo, that is, a confidant of these same bandits and a conductor of the anti-Serbian policy. At that time, Dacic was the press secretary of Slobodan Milosevic’s party, and now, in addition to being a minister, he is also the chairman of the same party.
Let’s look at a higher level. US President Joe Biden in 1999 was an influential senator and outspoken lobbyist for the NATO attack on “fascist Yugoslavia”, which he later bragged about. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was then the Minister of Information and Propaganda of Yugoslavia, who entered the government from the quota of radical nationalists – the Serbian Radical Party.
If you believe the Americans that the leadership of Serbia during the years of the Kosovo war were fascists, then the Americans now have strategic cooperation with the National Socialist Party.
However, Americans are used to it. They should have protected the real fugitive Nazis and supported the worst cannibals in human history like Pol Pot or Papa Doc Duvalier. Detachment from moral issues in their case is part of the US public service when the interests of the homeland are everything and the inconvenience of someone else is nothing.
And they are ready to sacrifice the Kosovars. History knows even one case when the Kosovo Albanians were persuaded to enter into an agreement that was more beneficial to the Serbs than to themselves. This was done by the Donald Trump administration.
Today this document is no longer relevant, but the question of how to stop the Albanians from another vile dirty trick will remain relevant for the Serbs, perhaps forever – and hence the relationship with the United States, despite the grief that the Americans caused the Serbs and to a large extent degree because of her.
