The US threatens Russia with severe sanctions in case of annexation of the occupied Ukrainian territories

“We are ready to impose further rapid and severe economic consequences on Russia, together with our allies and partners, in response to these actions if (Russia) continues on the path of annexation,” a White House spokesperson said.

“We continue to strongly support the Ukrainian people and provide them with historical levels of defense assistance to help them protect their territory, to help them defend their freedom,” underlined Jean-Pierre.

He recalled that the United States and other G7 countries have issued a joint statement that they will never recognize the claims of Russia and the sovereign territory of Ukraine, nor will they recognize the results of pseudo-referendums.

Speaking to the UN General Assembly this week, US President Joe Biden called the pseudo-referendums a clear violation of international law, as well as a disregard for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which underpin the Charter of United Nations, said Jeanpierre.

“What we are seeing in Russia, especially in terms of protests and how the Russians are fleeing their country, means that this war is not popular with the people,” said Jean-Pierre.

The current actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin are an expression of weakness, not a strong position of the regime, and people’s reactions show this, the White House spokesperson stressed.
