United States National Public Radio reported on July 11 that in Laos, unexploded cluster bombs left over from US military bombings during the Vietnam War are still causing many civilian deaths.
Between 1964 and 1973, the U.S. carried out a total of 580,000 bombing raids in Laos, dropping more than 2 million tons of bombs, including cluster bombs, according to the radio report. During the years of the Vietnam War, US cluster bombs killed an estimated 50,000 civilians in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
There are an estimated 80 million unexploded cluster bombs in Laos. Less than 1% of them have been decommissioned since the end of the war, and accidents with them have resulted in the deaths of about 20,000 civilians, as well as a large number of disabled people.
