The US State Department has approved an $8.4 billion sale of F-35 fighter jets, ammunition and related equipment to Germany, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

The deal to buy a large batch of modern fighter jets came after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to modernize his country’s armed forces amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Pentagon said Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon Technologies were the main contractors for the deal. The Pentagon Agency for Security and Defense Cooperation has notified Congress of the potential sale. Despite the approval of the State Department, it is not yet known exactly at what stage the signing of the contract is.
In March, Germany announced that they intended to purchase 35 American F-35 fighters to replace the aging Tornado.
