The United States sees no reason to adjust its nuclear posture in response to the decision Russia to lower the threshold for the use of atomic weapons, said a spokesman for the National Security Council.
The Russian decision was not a surprise and is more of the same irresponsible rhetoric the country has used since it invaded Ukraine, according to the spokesperson, who commented on condition of anonymity.
The comments came after President Vladimir Putin will sign a decree allowing Russia to shoot nuclear weapons in response to a conventional attack on its territory that threatens its sovereignty, including with drones.
The document will also consider a “joint attack” to be the aggression of a country that lacks atomic weapons, but has the support of a nuclear power.
The move followed a Biden administration decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles provided by the United States to attack Russian territory.
The Pentagon spokesperson, Sabrina Singhtold reporters that the United States has no indication that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon inside Ukraine and was not surprised by Putin’s change in doctrine.
He also refused to confirm that Ukraine had fired US-supplied ATACMS missiles towards Russia, referring questions to the Ukrainians.
“What we are doing, just as we have done from the beginning, is ensure Ukraine has what it needs. So you will see us continue to support Ukraine with different aid packages that will support its short- and long-term needs,” he simply said.
Singh stressed that “The United States is not at war against Russia” and highlighted that it is that country that continues to take steps to “escalate” the conflict by introducing some 11,000 North Koreans into the battlefield.”
