Recently, the world-famous director appealed his detention in custody in Switzerland, but lost the case and remained in custody.
The US has officially asked the Swiss authorities to extradite director Roman Polanski, who was accused of having sex with a minor more than 30 years ago.
The director has been wanted in the US since he left the country in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. He has lived in France since then, but was detained in Zurich in September, where he had gone to collect a lifetime achievement award from the local film festival. Polanski recently appealed against his detention in Switzerland, but lost the case and remains in custody. If the Swiss court approves the extradition request, he will be able to appeal it as well. Until then, the director will continue to work on his latest film from prison, as he has been doing for several weeks now.
Polanski’s arrest stirred spirits in his native Poland and France. Both sides have repeatedly called for his release, but to no avail.
