The US pledges at the OAS to support elections in Haiti | The World | DW

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, discussed this Tuesday (07/13/2021) with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, the situation in Haiti after the assassination of the president of that country , Jovenel Moise, and expressed Washington’s commitment to pave the way for legislative and presidential elections this year.

Blinken spoke by phone with the secretary of the inter-American body, located in Washington, “to discuss the situation in Haiti,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

“The secretary underscored the commitment of the United States to work with the OAS and our international partners to help Haitian institutions restore security and pave the way for free and fair legislative and presidential elections in 2021,” the spokesperson added.

The head of US diplomacy expressed “concern” about the political and security situation in the Caribbean nation, while reiterating the White House’s support “for democratic governance and stability in Haiti.”

Dialogue “with all parties”

He also thanked the work of the OAS, created in 1948 as a political forum for the countries of America, “in support of democracy in Haiti.”

On Monday, the US State Department urged Haiti’s political leaders to work toward an “inclusive and peaceful” consensus that would allow for “free” elections this year to overcome the crisis triggered by the murder of Moïse.

The president of Haiti was assassinated on July 7 at his residence in Port-au-Prince in an attack in which his wife, Martine Moïse, was injured, admitted to a hospital in Miami (USA), and for which they have been 21 people have been arrested so far, mostly Colombian mercenaries.

In addition to the United States, Canada conveyed to the interim prime minister of Haiti, Claude Joseph, the need for him to initiate a dialogue “with all parties” to “develop a credible plan” to allow elections to be held at the end of the year, the minister said today. Canadian Foreign Affairs Officer Marc Garneau in a statement confirming that he spoke with the Caribbean official on Monday.
