The US plan for humanitarian aid in Gaza – The role of Cyprus – 2024-03-09 15:55:11

Joe Biden organizes a plan to send humanitarian aid by sea, with the creation of a temporary port in Gaza by the US military.

According to ERT’s correspondent in Washington, Lena Argyris, the White House confirms the information of cooperation with Cyprus. “The initial missions will be through Cyprus, with the help of the US military and a coalition of partners and allies.”

As the White House official added, “this major new initiative will take several weeks to plan and execute. The forces that will be required to complete this mission are either already in the area or will begin moving there soon. We look forward to working with our close partners and allies in Europe, the Middle East and beyond to build a coalition of countries that will contribute capabilities and funding to this initiative.

This effort is based on the “Amalthia” initiative proposed by Cyprus, which provides a platform at the port of Larnaca for the transshipment of aid and the inspection by Israeli officials of goods bound for Gaza. I think it is important to state that we have worked very closely with the Israelis to promote this initiative and that the Israelis have worked very closely with the Cypriots for months to set up the specific mechanism in the port of Larnaca that will be necessary. And we will work closely and work out the details with them on some of the security questions.”
