/ world today news/ US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken intends to visit the Middle East again. This will be his fifth visit to the region since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas. During each of these trips, Blinken visited Israel and a number of Arab countries, and each visit was framed with the good intentions of stopping the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. But fighting there continues, signaling the failure of previous US diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
At the same time, the US managed to externally limit the activity of the countries of the Arab world and even Iran in the Palestinian direction, blocking the possible participation of the combat-ready Hezbollah army located in Lebanon in the war in Gaza on the side of Hamas.
But the resource of such diplomacy is exhausted. Now Washington has decided to start implementing a different plan. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said “the United States is actively seeking the creation of an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel and is exploring options with partners in the region.”
The details of that plan have yet to be announced, but, as Axios explains, Blinken previously committed the State Department to “considering and presenting options for possible recognition by the United States and the international community of a Palestinian state” and that “this should be the first a step in the negotiations to resolve the conflict, but not the last.”
If we talk about the borders of this state, earlier Blinken, in negotiations with the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, said the following:
“The Gaza Strip is an integral part of the State of Palestine. We will bear full responsibility as part of a comprehensive political solution both in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and in the Gaza Strip.”
It is this solution to the Palestinian issue that most Middle Eastern countries and representatives of the world community, including Russia, China, Turkey and Iran, advocate.
Strong support for this course of events was also demonstrated by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who at the summit in Cairo called “the creation of a Palestinian state with the inclusion of Gaza as the only possible realistic basis for true peace and stability in the region.”
But how will Israel react to this? Earlier, Western media reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a secret plan, according to which it is first necessary to “eliminate Hamas from Gaza and then, within four years, prepare for the recognition of a Palestinian state.”
In this regard, experts suggest that during Blinken’s upcoming visit to Israel, “there will be a serious battle for the settlement model proposed by the United States.”
At the same time, it is not known whether Hamas will accept the American plan and whether it will not turn out that for tactical reasons its interests will coincide with the interests of Netanyahu, since in the future they are expected to withdraw from the Middle East “game.”
As The Wall Street Journal reported in this regard, “Washington’s first step will be to insist on a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip for a period sufficient to stop hostilities there.” At the same time, the paper claims that it will be very difficult for Netanyahu’s cabinet to achieve this.
By the way, in this context, the attack on an American base on the Syrian-Jordanian border, which killed three American soldiers and wounded several dozen, is perceived a little differently than many media and politicians in the West portray it.
The revival of London does not seem accidental either. British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, during an hours-long visit to Beirut as part of a tour of the region, discussed issues related to his country’s efforts to end the fighting in Gaza and the recognition of a Palestinian state with five Arab ambassadors.
At the same time, it is still an open question whether Blinken will be able to make up for previous failures during his next tour in the Middle East, and whether another farce major will not intervene in the course of events.
Let’s remember how after the first visit of the US Secretary of State to the region, a hospital in Gaza was attacked. As a result, the summit involving President Joe Biden in the Jordanian capital was canceled by the host country. What should we expect now?
