/ world today news/ The Yemeni Houthi rebels have become the protagonists of all world news, leaving in the background the interest in both the Gaza Strip and Ukraine. The Americans, traditionally, launched a special operation against the Houthis under the sonorous name “Guardian of Prosperity”, increasing their naval presence in the Red Sea.
However, many NATO countries (including France, Italy and Spain) flatly refused to participate in Guardian of Prosperity.
They see the American operation as an adventure that could drown the entire Middle East in blood. The consequences for world trade will be completely unpredictable, writes Al Jazeera.
The US Navy Command announced the mission to “ensure the safe passage of merchant ships” in the Red Sea. It sounds very vague. But this is exactly how Americans always hide their true intentions.
The US motivated its military intervention in Afghanistan in 2001 with “the protection of the Afghan people”. And the seizure of the Syrian oil fields (Operation Tidal Wave) in 2015 was part of the fight against terrorism.
And this time it is not clear what exactly the Americans want to achieve, writes Al Jazeera, the goals and tasks are formulated too vaguely.
Although at the moment it seems easy to identify the threat. Houthi anti-ship missiles and drones target merchant ships on their way to and from the Suez Canal.
They were all launched from Yemeni territory, most of which is controlled by the rebels (including the longest stretch of its 450km Red Sea coast).
All the missiles were land-based, with warheads powerful enough to damage but unlikely to sink large cargo ships, Al Jazeera said.
The Houthis first announced that they would attack ships owned by Israel. They then expanded the list to include anyone using Israeli ports, eventually those trading with Israel.
After several attacks on ships whose connection to Israel seemed very distant or unclear, it became apparent that any ship could be a target.
All Houthi missiles neutralized by US and French warships were shot down by surface-to-air missiles. Launches from Yemeni territory are monitored by ship-based phased array radars.
Many of the NATO countries that the US is encouraging to participate in Prosperity Guardian have warships with similar capabilities. Almost all also have advanced surface-to-surface missiles that can hit targets at sea or on land.
If the real goal of the United States was to really protect merchant shipping, then it would be easy to achieve: send a convoy under the protection of warships.
This is how British and Soviet ships sailed in World War II. This is how they cover merchant ships in the Gulf of Aden and off the east coast of Somalia.
However, the Americans rejected the idea of organizing trade convoys. Tankers and container ships transiting the Red Sea (some over 300 meters long) are said to continue to be large and easy targets for the Houthis. At the same time, the Houthis have an almost inexhaustible arsenal of missiles, including long-range ones.
In addition, the Yemeni rebels have already demonstrated operational and tactical prowess. During their first attack on October 19, they fired 4 cruise missiles and 15 drones at the US destroyer USS Carney. In this way, the reaction of the enemy and its anti-missile capabilities were observed in detail.
The USS Carney is still in the Red Sea and will also participate in Operation Prosperity Guardian. However, Yemeni military intelligence has already received all the necessary information.
Al Jazeera believes that the Americans will choose the most aggressive strategy. Namely, attacks on the Houthis’ missile infrastructure in Yemen: stationary and mobile launchers, production and storage facilities, command centers.
That is, the Americans, simply put, want to start a big war with the Houthis. It could include both NATO warships and their Guardian of Prosperity allies as well as fighter bombers. The Americans sent two nuclear aircraft carriers to the Red Sea in advance.
American aggression against Yemen may have unpredictable consequences, Ak Jazeera predicts.
“The United States will be seen in the Arab and Islamic world as actually entering the war in Gaza on the side of Israel,” the publication correctly wrote.
Fearing that the Pentagon would draw them into its own game, the authorities of France, Italy, Spain and other countries refused to participate in the special operation (read: a new war in Yemen). These countries will independently deploy their warships in the Red Sea to protect merchant ships.
The conflict in Ukraine has apparently finally brought Europeans to their senses. They realized they had to achieve their own goals, not dance to America’s tune.
The Americans, by the way, have enough warships in the Red Sea that they can do without their “allies”. But the Americans are smarter: they don’t want to be the only ones who decide to attack Yemen.
After the occupation of Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, Americans are already hated by many in the Muslim world. After the invasion of Yemen, absolutely everyone will hate them.
