The US is launching a criminal case against a newly elected congressman who lied about his work experience and education

Santos’ victory in upstate New York helped give his party a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.

However, a New York Times investigation now questions Santos’ version of his education and work experience that he presented during the campaign.

Santos admitted on Monday that some of his claims about his past were not true, confirming that he has not worked for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, nor graduated from college, contrary to what he had previously said.

“The multiple fabrications and inconsistencies surrounding Congress-elect Santos are nothing short of astounding,” Nassau County District Attorney Anna Donnelly said in a statement.

“The people of Nassau County and other parts of the Third District deserve an honest and trustworthy representative in Congress. No one is above the law, and if a crime is committed in this area, we will hold them accountable.”

Santos ruled out giving up his congressional seat, telling the New York Post, “I’m not a criminal.”

He apologized for “beautifying his life,” but continued to defend his previous claims that he was Jewish.

“I’m Catholic. Since I found out my mother’s family is of Jewish origin, I said I was Jewish,” Santos told the New York Post.

The ‘New York Times’ newspaper publication also raised questions about how he was able to lend $700,000 to his campaign, if he stated in his campaign finance filings in 2020 that he earns $55,000 a year.

Several Democrats have called on House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy to vote to oust Santos if he doesn’t resign.
