The US is ‘angry’ because Jokowi invites Putin to attend the G20 Summit in Indonesia

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 Summit in November. However, the United States did not accept the decision. Washington says their attitude has changed with Moscow after the country’s attack on Ukraine.

In a press session, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said US President Joe Biden had publicly expressed his opposition to Putin’s presence. Even so, he said the US was very welcoming of Ukraine’s presence.

“We have expressed our view that we don’t think they (Russia) should be part of it (G20) publicly and privately,” he said.

US State Department spokeswoman Jalina Porter said separately that the US did not believe it could have a ‘business as usual’ relationship with Russia on the international stage. He also did not comment on whether Biden would be present in Bali.

Besides Putin, Jokowi also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In a telephone conversation with Zelenskyy, the head of state obtained update regarding the development of the current situation in Ukraine. During the talks, various requests for weapons assistance from Indonesia were also discussed.

“I emphasize that in accordance with the mandate of the Indonesian constitution and the principles of Indonesia’s foreign policy, it is prohibited to provide weapons assistance to other countries. However, I convey Indonesia’s readiness to provide humanitarian assistance. put forward,” said Jokowi.

Furthermore, the head of state said, the G20 has a role as a catalyst in the world’s economic recovery.

“And, if we talk about the recovery of the world economy, then there are two big things that affect it at this time, namely the first, the Covid-19 pandemic and the second the war in Ukraine,” said Jokowi.

“In this context, in a telephone conversation yesterday I invited President Zelenskyy to attend the G20 Summit,” he continued.

A day later, at exactly 19.00, Jokowi spoke by telephone with Putin. In the conversation, Jokowi said that Putin gave update regarding the situation in Ukraine including the ongoing negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine.

“I again emphasize the importance of ending the war immediately. I also emphasize that a peaceful solution can continue to be put forward and Indonesia is ready to contribute to the peace effort. On this occasion, President Putin expressed his gratitude for the invitation to the G20 summit and he said he would attend,” said Jokowi. .

In closing, Jokowi emphasized that Indonesia wants to unite the G20.

“There should not be divisions. Peace and stability are the keys to the recovery and development of the world economy,” said Jokowi.
