The US has imposed over 500 new sanctions against Russia – 2024-02-23 13:56:11

Biden imposes new sanction

US President Joe Biden announced on Friday that the US will introduce more than 500 new sanctions targeting Russia. The United States is looking to increase pressure on Moscow ahead of the end of the second anniversary of the military invasion of Ukraine. The information is from Reuters. Some of them are directed against persons connected with the imprisonment of Navalny, who died a week ago.

The US will also impose new export restrictions on nearly 100 entities for providing support to Russia. They will take action to further reduce Russia’s energy revenues, Biden said in a statement.

The measures are intended to hold Russia accountable for the war and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Biden said. “These sanctions will ensure that Putin pays an even higher price for his aggression abroad and repression at home,” the US president said.

He noted that the new measures would target individuals linked to Navalny’s imprisonment, as well as Russia’s financial sector, defense industrial base, supply networks and sanctions evaders on multiple continents.

“Two years after the start of this war, the people of Ukraine continue to fight with great courage. But he’s running out of ammo. Ukraine needs more supplies from the United States to hold the line against Russia’s relentless attacks, which are being carried out with weapons and ammunition from Iran and North Korea,” Biden explained in a written statement released ahead of the second anniversary of the start of the Russian military invasion in Ukraine.

“That’s why the House must pass the bipartisan national security supplemental bill before it’s too late,” he stressed.
