Tegucigalpa, June 7 (EFE) .- The United States has already donated more than 4.7 million doses of the covid-19 vaccine to Honduras, 249,210 of them this Tuesday, official sources in Tegucigalpa reported.
This Tuesday, the US government donated 249,210 doses of vaccines to Honduras through the Covax mechanism, promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
“There is no reason not to get vaccinated now that 249,210 more doses of vaccines have been donated by the United States through Covax. We want everyone in Honduras to be healthy! Working with health to help make that happen,” said the ambassador of USA in Tegucigalpa, Laura F. Dogu, in a message on Twitter.
Dogu met today with the Honduran Minister of Health, Manuel Matheu, to “coordinate efforts and discuss issues of migration, nutrition and HIV/AIDS.”
“To stop the COVID-19 pandemic and save lives, we need to guarantee access to vaccines. This is a shared urgency between the US and Honduras,” the US diplomat stressed.
“After two years we are still fighting a pandemic. I share with you all the frustrations and concerns. But we also share a feeling of optimism. I am encouraged to see the progress against the pandemic around the world, and especially here in Honduras,” he added.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Honduras has already received 5,315,030 doses of vaccines against covid-19 through the Covax mechanism, 4,726,300 of them donated by the US.
“Approximately 60% of the world’s population has received the primary vaccination schedule, but in low-income countries the proportion is only 13%,” said PAHO/WHO.
69% of the population of Honduras has the complete primary vaccine scheme against covid-19, which represents “good progress, but it is not enough,” he added.
“It is essential to close the gap of the unvaccinated to end the pandemic as a health emergency. Vaccines save lives, the data shows this both in Honduras and throughout the world. However, there is still a population that has not accessed to this benefit,” emphasized PAHO/WHO.
The covid-19 pandemic in Honduras began to spread in March 2020 and since then has left at least 10,441 dead and 380,116 infected, according to official figures. EFE
