Mexico City. “Simply speaking,” the United States government has not helped anyone in Latin America for decades, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, referring once again to Washington’s human rights report and reiterating that it has no why intervene in the internal life of the rest of the nations.
As he has done all week, the Mexican president spoke about the White House report, and ruled out that said information be valued within the United States so that the Senate may or may not authorize economic resources for countries that “behave well.” .
On the contrary, he emphasized that Mexico alone has invested between 2 and 3 billion dollars annually in the migration phenomenon in the region. “And we’re not there doing the math or telling them: ‘You’re behaving well, no more putting the police in the universities, no more saying that you’re going to be financing wars, violating human rights.'”
In the National Palace, during the morning, the man from Tabasco stated: “It is not true that this report has the purpose of seeing who they help and who they do not help, they simply do not help anyone, speaking in plain English. And what do they have to do? With all due respect, remove that qualification, it is not their responsibility. How are they going to get into the internal life of another country? It is a violation of the sovereignty of any people, of any country, we are independent.”
López Obrador insisted that there is a very good relationship with the Biden-Harris administration, and with his close group, whom he described as “very respectful”; However, with other sectors of Washington politics there are differences.
“Because with all due respect, in the United States they have not completely changed their foreign policy or have maintained the same foreign policy criteria for 200 years (…) there are other officials of the United States government who have a different conception, very arrogant, very attached to the old interventionist, interventionist policy, and they do not change.”
And he questioned those sectors: Don’t you think it’s anachronistic that they have or appropriate the right to qualify the behavior of independent, sovereign countries? Who are they to issue recommendations on human rights? Certify them: ‘This one behaves well, this one behaves badly.’ And they also want to justify it, as if we lived in a world of unconscious people, they want to justify it by saying, with this report that we collected, first, imagine the sources, they themselves say that the sources are from newspapers or media in Mexico, or whatever. What does the Judiciary think about our differences?
The Mexican president reiterated that the United States has not actually helped anyone in the region for more than five decades, when President John F. Kennedy launched the Alliance for Progress.
“And everything they have done since is military aid: Plan Colombia, Plan Mérida.”
He recalled that President George Washington himself said: “No country, no matter how powerful, can take advantage of the misfortune of another people.” So López Obrador closed: “I hope they change, because that doesn’t help them. We are already in different times, but hey, we have already talked enough about this.”
