/ world today news/ American senators fear that Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, instead of American fighter jets, may buy Russian equipment for $9 billion, RT reports on Saturday (May 7), referring to a publication in The Wall Street Journal.
According to the publication, the reason for this is a delay on the part of the White House. Lobbyists, including John McCain, are urging President Barack Obama to speed up approval of the deal.
The newspaper published excerpts from a letter sent in April to the president’s administration, signed by John McCain, Bob Corker, Jack Reid and Claire McCaskill. “We understand that the questions surrounding these contracts need to be carefully examined, but a final decision has been delayed for too long,” the letter said.
It also noted that such a delay would prompt the countries to purchase fighter jets from other manufacturers, including Russia. “America must not miss the opportunity to expand its influence in the Middle East, secure its industrial superiority, and must not yield to its rivals and adversaries,” the senators said.
According to the American edition, it is about the delivery of more than 60 F-15, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-35 fighters. Washington delayed implementation of the contracts for two years after objections from Israel, which fears the aircraft could fall into the wrong hands and be used against it.
As an argument in their favor, the senators cite the example of Kuwait’s purchase of 28 Typhoon fighters from the European concern Eurofighter, instead of American machines.
According to information from the WSJ this week, the Obama administration has again delayed the decision to deliver fighter jets, manufactured by Boeing and Lockheed Martin, to Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.
