Located in the town of Redzikowo near the Baltic coast, the main center which will be officially inaugurated on Wednesday has been in operation since the 2000s.
As Poland tries to reassure its citizens of NATO’s commitment to their security after Donald Trump’s presidential election victory, they say the medal shows that the Its military alliance with Washington remains firm, no matter who is in the White House.
The base is about 250 km (155 miles) from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
“It will take time, but this development confirms the geostrategic resolve of the United States,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in a video posted on social media platform X on Tuesday.
Polish President Andrzej Duda, a conservative who has emphasized his warm relationship with Trump, will attend the opening ceremony along with NATO representatives.
How will Russia respond?
The Kremlin said that the deployment of the missile defense system in Poland showed that “the American military infrastructure is moving towards our borders” as “part of efforts to contain Russia to military”.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned on Wednesday that Russia would take steps to ensure “equality” in response, but did not say what that would be.
“Of course, this requires the implementation of appropriate measures to maintain balance,” Peskov told reporters, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
Trump’s criticism in the past has worried some NATO members, as he has promised that the US under his leadership will not protect countries that do not invest enough in defense.
As the NATO country that spends the most on defense relative to the size of its economy, Poland says it doesn’t need to worry too much.
