The US blames Ukraine for the biggest sabotage against Russia – 2024-04-23 08:04:53

/ world today news/ The Western publications “Washington Post” and “Spiegel”, citing unnamed sources, reported that the bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipeline was led by Colonel Roman Chervinsky of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (pictured). But Volodymyr Zelensky claims that he did not know about this. The former soldier himself has already denied his involvement in the terrorist attack. Experts in the US and Russia have pointed out that in this way Washington wants to absolve itself of responsibility for sabotage. Why are the US authorities blaming their Ukrainian partners for the terrorist attack through the media?

Former colonel of the Ukrainian special operations forces Roman Chervinsky coordinated the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which took place on September 26, 2022, The Washington Post and Spiegel wrote, citing officials in Ukraine and European countries, as and other sources familiar with the details of the undercover operation.

Then, as a result of a series of explosions in the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden in the Baltic Sea, the two lines of Nord Stream 1 and one of the two lines of Nord Stream 2 were destroyed. The reports say Czerwinski, 48, was the “coordinator” of the operation, managing the logistics and support of a team of six saboteurs.

The group chartered a sailboat under false names and used deep-sea diving equipment to plant explosive devices in Russian gas pipelines. Chervinsky did not act of his own free will, but carried out the orders of high-ranking Ukrainian officials, who were ultimately subordinated to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Valery Zaluzhny.

Czervinski himself, through his lawyer, denied his involvement in the sabotage of the pipeline. “All speculations about my involvement in the attack on Nord Stream are spread by Russian propaganda without any basis,” the former Ukrainian officer said in a written statement. Representatives of the Ukrainian authorities did not respond to questions about Chervinsky’s involvement in the sabotage.

The American publication notes that Chervinsky’s role in this case illustrates the complex dynamics and internal rivalries of Kiev’s elites, with Ukrainian intelligence and the military often at odds with the political leadership. From February 2022, Chervinsky served in the SVO zone, fighting against Russian forces. He reported to Major General Victor Ganuschak, who communicated directly with Zaluzhny.

“Everyone involved in the planning and execution reported directly to Zaluzhny, so Zelensky was not aware of it,” according to a CIA intelligence report allegedly shared by Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard . Officials in many countries have said privately that they are confident that Zelensky did not personally approve the attack on Nord Stream.

The Washington Post note also stated that in 2020, Chervinsky led an operation to lure Wagner Group fighters into Belarus to capture them and hand them over to Ukraine to face charges. In his statement, Chervinsky indicated that he also “planned and carried out operations to kill the leaders of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.” He is also said to have led the “kidnapping of a witness” who could confirm Russian involvement in the Boeing attack on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over the Donbass in 2014, which killed all 298 passengers and crew on board.

In May of this year, the Kyiv Court of Appeals placed Chervinsky under arrest as part of a criminal case related to the failed Ukrainian intelligence operation to hijack a Russian military plane. The serviceman from the Russian Air Force was promised money, new documents and taking his family abroad. The officer was supposed to hijack the plane and land it at the Kanatovo military airport in the Kirovohrad region. But instead of a Russian plane, Russian missiles arrive at the airport. Under the guise of the pilot, Russian intelligence services communicated with Ukrainian intelligence.

In the United States, The Washington Post and Spiegel assessed the “sensation” differently. American political scientist Scott Bennett in a conversation with “Izvestia” called Chervinsky a “scapegoat”. “It’s already been reported by people like Seymour Hirsch, who has inside contacts, that the US CIA colluded and actually sent divers to blow them up,” he said.

According to the expert, such an accusation against Chervinsky is the preparation of the USA for a complete separation from the regime of Vladimir Zelensky. Bennett further pointed out that all of these actions by Washington are designed to divert attention and shift the blame to someone else. “And I wouldn’t be surprised if Czerwinski disappeared, or was killed, or suddenly ended up on the beach in Miami,” the political scientist explained. American billionaire Elon Musk also responded to the Washington Post story, writing: “Interesting” on the X social network.

The Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the Federation Council Grigory Karasin called it a “fairy tale”, the first deputy head of the Committee on International Affairs of the State Duma Alexey Chepa accused the US and NATO of trying to deflect suspicions of a terrorist attack, and the senator from Crimea Sergei Tsekov acknowledged Chervinsky’s involvement in the attack, but pointed to the US as the main organizers and executors.

“There is, of course, no faith in these publications – what faith can there be in an enemy press in an age of war? It’s like believing the Voelkischer Beobachter in 1942. The Washington Post is the mouthpiece of the US Democratic Party, and Spiegel is the information resource of the pro-American Free Democratic Party of Germany. They, under the strict leadership of Washington, created a story that Ukraine was allegedly fully responsible for the sabotage of the gas pipeline,” said Vadim Trukhachev, an associate professor at the Department of External Regional Studies and Foreign Policy at the Russian State Humanitarian University.

“The point is that the CIA’s involvement in this seems like a humiliation for Germany. So Washington and Berlin found a scapegoat in Kiev so they wouldn’t fight alone. Why now? So that it looks like the result of an investigation and not just an answer to the CIA involvement stuff. Will the American public believe it? Well, he will hardly notice,” explained the interlocutor.

“Everything is intended for the German ordinary citizens, most of whom will not believe this story, simply based on logic and the understanding that the ultimate leader of sabotage in any case is the United States. By the way, the Free Democratic Party did not do very well in the last German elections in those countries where previously its positions were strong. So apparently the Germans no longer trust the US,” the analyst added.

“As for Ukraine, it cannot yet be said that the US is completely disappointed with this project of its own and has decided to attribute all the negativity to it. But at the same time, it is obvious that the project brings Americans much less than they expected. Therefore, this story with Chervinsky is such an indirect benefit that the US decided to get from Ukraine. At the expense of Kiev, eliminate all misunderstandings with Berlin related to the blowing up of the Nord Stream, the expert specifies.

“The White House cannot come to terms with the fact that they lost the issue of Nord Stream sabotage a long time ago. I suspect even the most devoted readers of the Washington Post will not believe this story. And this is not the final version of the sabotage. The United States is now throwing things into the public space, and by the end of the year they will have to form some coherent concept of sabotage that suits America and Europe,” says Americanist Dmitry Drobnitsky.

“All this is being done within the framework of the US external problem in the form of Ukraine. Washington has experience in such games – previously such things were done to justify the invasion of Iraq, as well as the withdrawal from Afghanistan. There are also logical questions here. For example: where then is the request for extradition to Germany? Where is the production and clarification of the details of the case through diplomatic channels between Kiev and Berlin? And the initial reason for everything that is happening is the disunity of the groups of influence in the administration of the President of the United States, each of which does not know what the others are doing,” added the interlocutor.

“In my opinion, things about Chervinsky are the result of a behind-the-scenes struggle between those forces in the US who are behind Zelensky, against those who are behind Zaluzhny. Czervinski himself is an ideal scapegoat, already under investigation for another case. Only one thing is interesting: where the “investigation” will go and whether this story will hit Zaluzhny himself. I think there is a debate now in the United States as to who should ultimately be chosen as the ultimate culprit in the case. And, of course, the same struggle is being waged in Kyiv between the internal Ukrainian elites,” Americanist Malek Dudakov shares his opinion.

“However, this case cannot be projected onto all relations between Washington and Kyiv. It cannot be said that the US has completely disillusioned with the Ukrainian project and will now blame Ukraine for everything they can. The US will continue to sponsor Ukraine once the current rift in Congress is resolved. So here we see only a showdown between separate groups of influence – in Washington and Kiev,” concluded the political scientist.
