The US State Department on Thursday (10/2) approved the planned sale of 36 F-15 fighter jets and various kinds of military equipment worth US$14 billion or Rp.200.8 trillion (exchange rate of Rp.14,347 per US dollar) to Indonesia.
The approval was given shortly after Indonesia through Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto signed an agreement to purchase 42 Dassault Rafale 4.5 generation fighter jets with France.
Citing AFP Friday (11/2), the US State Department said:
“The security of regional partners is critical to political stability and economic progress in the Asia-Pacific region,” they said in a statement.
RI Purchases 42 Rafale Fighter Jets and French Submarines
Indonesia has agreed to acquire 42 Dassault Rafale 4.5 generation fighter jets made in France.
The purchase agreement was signed by the Indonesian Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto when entertaining the arrival of the French Defense Minister Florence Parly in Jakarta on Thursday (10/2).
Prabowo explained that for the first stage, Indonesia would bring the first 6 Rafale jets.
“We are starting today by signing the first contract for 6 aircraft,” Prabowo said at the Indonesian Defense Ministry’s office as quoted by Antara.
British Foreign Minister to Russia to Discuss Tensions in Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, met with British Foreign Minister Liz Truss on Wednesday (9/2). During the meeting, Lavrov emphasized that Western countries’ ultimatums regarding Ukraine were useless.
“This ideological approach, ultimatums, threats are useless,” Lavrov was quoted as saying AFP.
Lavrov accused the diplomats of the United States and several European countries of using threats and ultimatums in discussing the Ukraine issue. According to him, this approach is not diplomatic.
The talks between Lavrov and Truss are the latest round of Western diplomacy this week to defuse the crisis at the Ukrainian border.
