The US accuses Russia of trying to establish a pro-Kremlin regime in Moldova

The United States on Friday accused Russia of trying to destabilize Moldova in order to overthrow its pro-European government and install a pro-Russian regime.

“We believe that Russia is looking for ways to weaken the Moldovan government, possibly with the ultimate goal of getting a more pro-Russian administration,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

The Moldovan government is trying to build closer ties with the West and is cooperating with neighboring Ukraine, which is currently fighting Russian aggression.

Meanwhile, the breakaway region of Transnistria, which belongs to Moldova, is effectively controlled by Russia, which has deployed a contingent of so-called peacekeepers there.

“Russian actors, some of whom have ongoing ties to Russian intelligence services, are attempting to stage and use protests in Moldova as the basis for a staged rebellion against the Moldovan government,” Kirby said.

He added that Washington believes in “Moldova’s democratic and economic institutions and their ability to withstand this threat” and that the United States will continue to support Chisinau.

Kirby also said that the United States is stepping up informing Moldova about Russian activities so that Chisinau can thwart the Russian plans.
