Washington, Mar 18 (EFE) .- The United States reached 29,663,132 confirmed cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus this Thursday and 539,320 deaths from covid-19, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
This balance at 20.00 local time (00.00 GMT on Friday) is 1,375 more deaths than on Wednesday and 60,323 new infections.
California is now the worst-hit state by the pandemic with 57,164 deaths, followed by New York (49,262), Texas (47,025), Florida (32,598), Pennsylvania (24,722), New Jersey (24,076) and Illinois (23,287).
Other states with a large death toll are Georgia (18,420), Ohio (17,991), Michigan (16,843), Massachusetts (16,759) or Arizona (16,606).
In terms of infections, California has 3,632,254, followed by Texas with 2,745,617, third is Florida with 1,994,117, New York is fourth with 1,767,290 and Illinois is fifth with 1,215,992.
The provisional death toll -539,320- far exceeds the lower limit of the initial estimates of the White House, which projected in the best of cases between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.
The new president of the United States, Joe Biden, has predicted that in total more than 600,000 people in the country will die from the virus.
For its part, the Institute for Health Metrics and Assessments (IHME) of the University of Washington, whose models for predicting the evolution of the pandemic are often set by the White House, estimates that by July 1, some will have died. 600,000 people.
As far as vaccines are concerned, some 75.5 million people (22.7% of the population) have received at least one dose, of which 41 million (12.3%) are already fully inoculated.
