The Urgent Need to Dispose of Expired Ammunition: Insights from Former Deputy Defense Minister

“Whatever we can give with an expired expiration date – the people in uniform know best what is there. What we give is not even kept for wartime supplies,” said former Deputy Defense Minister Valentin Radev in the studio of “The Day” ON AIR”.

He was adamant that our country must get rid of such ammunition, which poses a real danger.

“To be precise – they are expired, not defective, this is the wrong term, they are checked every 5 years at the most. They are 30 years old. We remember the explosion in Chelopechene in 2008 – it can happen again. If they are not stored, they are moved for disposal, and there they already become dangerous. Money is also given for the disposal. Until then, they are dangerous, Chelopechene proved it, Petolachka too,” motivated the guest.

In front of Bulgaria ON AIR, he indicated that in Ukraine, the fuel, a combat part, and repair can be used from the weaponry – whatever the possibility is there. Radev also added that he sees no reason why the topic should not be classified.

“We give them to protect themselves, these are defensive means. Their range is 90 km. I don’t know what kind of secrecy they are talking about. Who are we keeping it from – Russia? Russia sold them to us, they know their numbers, unlike us they know when their expiration date expires. They have statistics, and we hide the number of them,” said the former Deputy Minister of Defense.
