North Dakota Pipeline Authority Director Justin Kringstad has highlighted the critical need for more liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipelines in the state. He mentioned that OneOK has announced the expansion of the Elk Creek pipeline system by 100,000 barrels of natural gas liquids (NGL), which is a positive development. Kringstad emphasized that additional NGL capacity is urgently needed, especially considering the expected increase in liquefied gas volumes.
As liquefied gas volumes continue to grow, Kringstad noted the possibility of more being transported by rail. This indicates the possibility of one or two additional trains carrying NGL leaving the region.
As for “dry gas,” Kringstad mentioned two new pipeline projects, namely Bison Express and WBI Grasslands, which will transport gas to Cheyenne, Wyoming. He noted that this would require increased gas processing infrastructure to meet transmission needs. Kringstad estimated that the state would need an additional 400 million to 800 million cubic feet (mcf) of gas processing, on top of existing infrastructure.
Discussions are currently underway to address this need. Finding the right solutions to improve gas processing capabilities is vital to ensuring the efficient transmission and utilization of natural gas resources in North Dakota.
In summary, Justin Kringstad, director of the North Dakota Pipeline Authority, has highlighted the pressing need for more liquefied natural gas pipelines in the state. OneOK’s expansion of the Elk Creek pipeline system is seen as a positive step toward meeting the growing demand for NGL capacity. The possibility of further liquefied gas transportation by rail and the need for additional gas processing infrastructure on the “dry gas” side have also been highlighted. Efforts are underway to find suitable solutions that address these needs and support the continued growth of the natural gas industry in North Dakota.
