The next US president should be a conservative Republican candidate who dares to “call hostile regimes evil and a threat” because the world needs American leadership, former British Prime Minister Liz Truss said in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.
“Moscow has been lulled into the illusion that its armed forces can withstand the might of Washington. But the West must provide Ukraine with the weapons needed to deliver a knockout blow to Russia. This would send a direct message to Russia’s authoritarian patrons in China and Iran,” Truss wrote.
The former prime minister called for providing a quantitative military advantage to Kyiv to “tip the scales on the side of Ukraine.” In addition, she continued, it is necessary to speed up the process of this state’s accession to NATO.
Truss shared the observation that too many in the West became complacent when the USSR lost the Cold War and collapsed, believing “that the victory of freedom and democracy is eternal.” In her opinion, this is not so. She gave an example: China was admitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on favorable terms, but now Xi Jinpingwho “proclaimed himself ruler for life” of China, “suppressed democracy and free speech in Hong Kong and presided over human rights abuses in Xinjiang province.”
Additionally, Iran supports Hamas and other militant groups and is working on its nuclear capabilities while the US “wait in vain for Tehran to sign the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the nuclear deal.” Truss questioned whether it was surprising that these countries’ governments were “acting with impunity” with little condemnation from other states.
“During the Cold War, the US led an alliance of free world countries, including Britain and Japan, controlling exports to China and the communist countries of Eastern Europe. The US must once again lead the free world by ensuring that we do not export technology or goods that could be used against us – an economic NATO,” the former British prime minister added.
