The Urgent Call for Reform in Cuba: Film Critic Denounces Cynicism of Officials and Lack of Ethical Principles

The film critic Gustavo Arcos Fernández-Britto spoke out for a general reform in Cuba and not from a single sector, in a publication in which he denounced the cynicism of officials of the Ministry of Culture (MINCULT) who now boast of having created a “temporary working group for Cuban Cinema.”

“On the television news (NTV) they tell us that the Temporary Working Group (GTT), created by the Government to address cinema problemshas had its fourth meeting where MINCULT authorities and filmmakers were present,” Arcos said in his post on Facebook.

The professor questioned that “Neither the NTV nor the informative note speak of the fact that this GTT was created because authorities of the Government itself and the MINCULT violated all types of ethical principles and copyright laws.subscribed by the filmmakers”.

“After three months of creating an Assembly of Filmmakers, which has sent letters to the Government and the Party without being answered, also failing to comply with what is established by law, the events that gave rise to the public protest (the broadcast on television, without authorization of the documentary Fito’s Havanaby Juan Vilar), and the signing of a declaration by almost 700 artists and citizens They continue to be silenced,” he denounced.

“What’s the point of talking about how to make films if they are not shown later?” the critic asked.

Arcos recalled that More than 200 Cuban films await a release in the island’s movie theaters: “The authorities know it, the same ones who smilingly present a power point reproducing standards that have existed since the ICAIC was created”.

Authors and filmmakers have been publicly despised and slandered by cultural authoritiesthe same ones that now appear interested in ‘addressing the problems of the sector,'” he said, and lamented that “some filmmakers appear sitting at the same table as those who have done so much harm to a community for almost 20 years.”

“Those who participated in the recent copyright violations were also present there, speaking nothing more and nothing less than copyright. This is a mockery, an alienation, a cynical absurdity that demonstrates once again the degree of impunity that exists in this country,” he considered.

“It is no longer about solving or applying reforms to watch and make movies. An entire nation must be reformed. We want to see our cinema, but we need them to return the country first“said the professor of more than 20 generations at the Faculty of Art of Audiovisual Media of the Higher Institute of Art.

In 2018 Arcos made public his position against the decision of the state Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) to censor I want to make a movie and to publicly “scold” the members of the Organizing Committee of the 2018 Youth Exhibition.

In December 2021, in an article published on the blog The Young Cuba, the academic criticized the regime’s management. He said that it was not “the so-called dissidents, nor the mercenaries, nor the external enemies” who were generating “a break with the Revolutionbut it is itself that is imploding, destroying itself from within.”

Respect to the Cubans who months before had participated in the anti-government protests of 11J, affirmed that in them there was also “the anguish due to the lack of real dialogue, the voices of those who no longer want to remain silent, and the dissatisfied gesture, why not? in the face of the erratic management of a Government.”
