The “Kalima” translation project, at the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, has issued the Arabic translation of the book “The Urban Guide to the United Arab Emirates”, written by Hendrik Boullet and Jean Demogue, translated by Dr. Musa Al-Haloul, and reviewed by Omar Al-Ayoubi.

The authors shed light on the various distinctive architectural landmarks and buildings in the country, in addition to the architect or company that excelled in designing them.

The book was originally published in German, then was published in English in 2016. The book consists of an introduction and seven chapters, each devoted to one of the seven emirates. There is an ample appendix of maps, a glossary of local terms mentioned in the book, and a list of the names of urban projects and engineering companies that contributed to the urban renaissance in the UAE.

The book reviews the great diversity of architecture in the UAE. In addition to the famous buildings that broke records in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and the edifices of a new traditional character in Sharjah, you can find luxury facilities and modern projects also in other emirates. Moreover, there are numerous examples of the new generation of Emirati architecture that emphasizes sustainability and the preservation of diverse building traditions.

This architectural guide includes more than 200 buildings and projects in the UAE, and provides the reader with all the information about amazing high-tech facilities, in addition to Arab-Islamic projects. It is complemented by interviews with international and local architects, and informative articles on culture and history.

Hendrik Bouleh is an architect, urban researcher and author of a wide range of professional publications.

Jan Demouges is a reporter, PR editor and screenwriter for national and international publishing companies, foundations and projects in Germany, Afghanistan and the Philippines. Together, the two authors published the book “The Architectural Guide to Istanbul” by Dom Publishing. They jointly run TheLink.berlin, an online magazine for international tourism specializing in architecture.

As for the translator, Dr. Musa Al-Haloul, he is a Syrian academic and translator. He studied English literature at the University of Aleppo, then obtained a master’s and doctorate in comparative literature from Pennsylvania State University in the United States of America. He is currently a professor of comparative literature at the Department of Foreign Languages ​​at Taif University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He has many translations from English, including: “Maori Myths and Their Fairy Tales” (Abu Dhabi), “Snoora Ida: An Icelandic Epic” (Abu Dhabi), “A Book Among the Rubble: The Great Epic of Gilgamesh, How It Was Lost and How It Was Discovered” (Cairo), and other books and translations. .
