Jordan Rossiter was once hailed as one of Liverpool’s most promising youth players. At the club since he was 6 years old, the midfielder stood out at youth levels, reached the U-18s at the age of 15, went to the U-19s shortly after and, aged 17, made his debut in the main team… and then with a goal. At the time he became the second-youngest player to score for the club, just behind Michael Owen. It was the perfect story of the kid coming through training and rising to the top of the hierarchy. But Rossiter had something that set him apart. Despite being a Liverpool player since he was 6 years old, he was born a fan of Everton, saw that love grow and, pure and simple… hated wearing the shirt of the club where he played. The story was shared this week by Karl Robinson, who mentored the then young midfielder in his youth at Liverpool. “He was a staunch Everton fan, so we had to ban him from wearing the Everton kit in the gym. Still, he hated Liverpool so much that he just wore the Celtic kit because he just couldn’t stand to have it. the Liverpool one worn. He refused to use it because he was a big Everton fan. And this is nothing unusual, because there are many kids in the Liverpool academy who would be Everton fans. I am sure there will be a similar situation in Everton academy, with lots of kids who are Liverpool fans”, considered Karl Robinson, in conversation with podcast ‘I Had Trials Once’. Rossiter, it should be noted, would leave Liverpool in 2016, aged 19, heading to Rangers, curiously the rival of Celtic, the team of that jersey he wore in gym training. He made just 16 appearances for the Scots before moving on to three loan spells, to Bury and twice to Fleetwood Town. He currently plays for Bristol Rovers, from League One, but far from what was pointed out as the future…
