The Unusual Frequency of Weekend Rainfall in New York City

NEW YORK — Do you get the feeling that weekends in and around New York City have been unusually rainy lately? If so, your senses are spot on.

This spring, the vast majority of the rains have fallen on weekends. Saturdays have been particularly rainy.

It’s not just a little, either. In the last 12 weeks, Central Park has received just under 13 inches of rain. During that time, 77% of the precipitation fell on weekend days and nearly half, 5.9 inches, on Saturdays. Last weekend, Central Park picked up 0.77 inches. On the last Saturday of April 2.5 inches fell.

And it is not the amount of rain, but the unheard of frequency.

In the last 12 Saturdays, we have recorded measurable rain nine times. That’s more than double the frequency of any other day of the week.

You may be wondering if there is a scientific explanation for this spring’s uneven precipitation. In short, there isn’t. It’s sheer luck (or lack thereof) that has brought us rainy weekends so often this spring.

If you’re not a fan of humid weather, especially on holidays, then the forecast for Memorial Day weekend looks promising. There is a weather system looming to the south which will bring wet weather early this week to the southeast.

That system will migrate our way over the weekend, but right now it should stop before it hits the tri-state, which means dry weather here. Of course, the forecast is sure to change at least a little from time to time, so keep checking with The Weather Authority for forecast updates.
