Sarah of York (nee Ferguson) was never Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite daughter-in-law, but she was married to the Queen’s favorite son, Prince Andrew.
One day, the late Elizabeth II, during a vacation at Balmoral, demanded that Sarah “pack her bags” and leave the palace. It happened during the summer holidays of 1992, after a photo of Sarah on the beach with financier John Bryan licking her fingers made British headlines. At that time, Sarah and Prince Andrew had been separated for five months, but officially divorced only in 1996.
After seeing these pictures on the front pages, the late Queen Elizabeth II told Sarah to “pack her bags and leave immediately,” and Prince Philip “never spoke to her again,” writes express. Until the death of the queen’s husband, Sarah was never able to make peace with him.
She was no longer invited to family events. It was only late last year that King Charles III invited Sarah to join family members for a Christmas service.
We saw her at a few more family events this year, including the Easter service at St. George’s Chapel.
