The Unspoken Rules of Pee Breaks in the Tour de France

The tour of France started on July 1. More than five hours of cycling a day in front of dozens of cameras and thousands of spectators along the roads. This is what the daily life of the runners looks like during these three weeks. Not easy in these conditions to be discreet when you have an urgent desire.

You should know that pee breaks are governed by a few “codes” between runners.

At the start of each stage, in the first kilometers, the pack stops a few minutes on the side of the road for a collective pee. “There can be 20, 30, 50 riders peeing at the same time side by side. They try to find a discreet place, like a passage in the forest, for example”, explains Alexandre Rolin, former editor-in-chief of Cyclism’ News During this time, the other runners respect an unspoken rule which consists in not accelerating so as not to outrun those who have stopped. These stops are obviously not filmed by the cameramen who prefer to draw the viewer’s attention to the pretty medieval castle located a few kilometers from the race.

Because they are afraid of wasting time or because the desire is far too pressing, some runners do not hesitate to place themselves on the side of the road. With a little agility, they manage to urinate without stopping. “It takes a little practice, but it’s doable,” said Belgian cyclist Philippe Gilbert, interviewed by RTBF.
