The Unreliable Engines of Hyundai and Kia: A Closer Look at the Theta II Series

Engines from Korean companies Hyundai and Kia are considered the most unreliable

Each company has its own requirements for power plants. Although there is one irrefutable fact – its reliability. This parameter is always a priority. However, there are a few vehicles that don’t do it so well. We are talking about cars from the South Korean brands Hyundai and Kia, which are equipped with the Theta II engine.

It is worth noting that when creating a power unit, developers often pursue specific goals. So, a motor may have mediocre power, but benefit from traction torque or dynamics, as well as fuel consumption. It may be the other way around. In accordance with this, journalists from the Jalopnik portal were interested in which units could not boast a high safety margin.

It is noteworthy that the survey showed a surprising result. The motors of the Theta II series, which are exactly what Hyundai and Kia companies use, received the most negative reviews. We are talking about 2.0 and 2.4 liter units. By the way, they can be found on cars such as Kia Sportage, Optima, Stinger and Genesis G70. The problem itself lies in the design features of the oil pump and the structure of the catalysts (photo: Kia).
