Dutch striker legend Marco van Basten thinks Barcelona’s superstar Lionel Messi is clearly better than his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus Turin. The 1988 European champion asked this in an interview with the Corriere della Sera clear.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player,” said van Basten, before adding: “Anyone who says he’s better than Messi doesn’t know anything about football. Or he does it out of spite.”
Van Basten: ‘Messi fell into a pot of football genius’
The debate as to whether Ronaldo or Messi is better has occupied fans and pundits for years. Van Basten can’t understand it: “Messi is unique. He cannot be copied and his game cannot be imitated. There are players like him every 50 or 100 years. As a child he fell into a pot of football genius.”
Van Basten himself was once named Europe’s footballer of the year three times before he was forced to retire at the age of 31 due to persistent ankle problems. He is impressed by how Messi and Ronaldo still excel at an advanced footballer age: “I practically stopped when I was 28. Look at where Ronaldo and Messi are still at over 30!”
