There is a connection unknown to many: the one between tachycardia and reflux. However, there is a solution to solve both of them in one move.
The link between tachycardia and gastroesophageal reflux is a link ignored by most. Nevertheless many people, especially after eating a meal, complain of both. Of course, it may well be that the two conditions are independent and each has its own specific cause. But sometimes there can be a connection instead.
In particular gastroesophageal reflux can facilitate what is known as “paroxysmal tachycardia”. This is an increase in heart rate felt by the person without the electrocardiogram being able to detect it at the time of the exam.
Tachycardia – or the acceleration of the heartbeat – causes those who suffer from it the disturbing sensation of “having their heart in their throat”. It can also lead to a feeling of shortness of breath and persistent tightness in the chest. In some cases There may be health problems at the origin of tachycardia. One of these is gastroesophageal reflux.
That unknown link between tachycardia and reflux: here’s how to fix it according to experts
Gastroesophageal reflux can cause your heart to beat faster. This pathology consists of an ascent of the acidic contents of the stomach into the esophagus through the cardia, the valve that separates these two organs. Reflux can be favored by excesses at the table, an unhealthy diet, obesity or hiatus hernia.

Reflux causes heartburn, or burning behind the breastbone and acidity in the mouth, along with regurgitation of food. This situation can also be favored by anxiety and bad habits like that of eating too quickly and chewing food too little. In this way the stomach presses on the diaphragm which, in turn, puts pressure on the heart, favoring the alteration of the cardiac rhythm and therefore also tachycardia.
However, the electrocardiogram does not detect tachycardia caused by gastroesophageal reflux. When you suspect a connection because the problem occurs after eating, it is better to undergo a cardiac holter (which detects tachycardia) accompanied by a pHmetry (able to detect reflux) over 24 hours.
How to cure reflux helps resolve tachycardia
In these cases, the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux can also resolve, totally or partially, the tachycardia. He explains it to Gazzetta dello Sport Professor Luigi Bonavina, professor of Surgery at the University of Milan and president of Aires (Italian Esophagus Research Association), as well as head of the University General Surgery Unit and the Esophagus Center of the Irccs Policlinico San Donato in Milan.
Those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux, underlines the expert, must «change your lifestyle». First of all it is fundamental «eat slowly, chew carefully and limit the amount of food». Then there are the «herbal teas based on wild fennel and mallow [che] they help you relax and fight postprandial aerophagia”.
Also «proton pump inhibitor drugs» can significantly reduce the intensity and frequency of tachycardia crises. In some selected cases, anti-reflux surgery may then be necessary. Sometimes, Professor Bonavina then states, «it can be useful to associate small doses of beta blockers». Also very useful diaphragmatic gymnastics. If tachycardia is associated with gastroesophageal reflux, a procedure is also essential specialist cardiological check-up. And even if the tests do not reveal anything worrying for the heart, it is still recommended practice an amateur physical activity.
