Professors from the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences of the University of Cantabria are developing a interuniversity teaching innovation project on ‘The use of Instagram as a teaching resource in the subject of Mathematics for Economists in the Degree in Business Administration and Management’.
Teachers from UC (Faustino Prieto, Óscar Luis Alonso and José Alejandro Mendoza), as well as from the Complutense University of Madrid (Isabel Granda) and the Madrid University College of Financial Studies (José María Sarabia).
Faustino Prieto explained that the initiative aims to help students learn math using the social network they use the most, which is their day to day. According to the teacher, it is a pretty good medium to bring them closer to the content they need to learn.
The project has two main characteristics: that the associated materials (solved exercises of the subject) are published in the account @phipigram at the same time as the classes, which encourages autonomous study by the student, according to Prieto, and that in the publications vocabulary is used in both Spanish and English, favoring the bilingual study of the subject.
Prieto has indicated that the teachers involved in the project are quite excited about the initiative, which is nearing completion and a pilot test was carried out last year in order to analyze the degree of acceptance among students.
A 63% of students enrolled, who were 86% of those who took the exams, subscribed to the project account.
