The universe is reborn
If you were given god-like powers and could choose what fate you wanted the universe to have, there’s actually one theory that’s more uplifting than the others.
Even if the universe ends, it doesn’t have to be forever. One possibility is that a new universe is born after the current one. If our universe contracts, it may end up “popping” back out. The theory is called the big bounce.
According to the big bounce theory, the contraction ends at a point without extension, a singularity, where all matter and energy are gathered, and then a new big bang gives birth to the next universe. The scientists who have predicted the impending contraction of the universe, however, believe that it will end in a different way, a so-called soft bounce.
The soft bounce theory, as Paul J. Steinhardt presented along with Anna Ijjas in 2019, predicts that the contraction will be slow and never reach a singularity until the universe begins to expand again in about a billion years.
